WEEKEND UPDATE: REAL MADRID WINS SPORTING GIJON, STAYS ON TOP OF LEAGUE TABLE

It was quite an obvious prediction that Real Madrid was in a different class from Sporting Gijon whom they played on Saturday and a win was quite predictable. Especially when the match was at the Santiago Bernabeu.

But Sporting Gijon put in a good fight, had a couple of chances still were not able to steal a draw or win. Real Madrid had an amazing first as the took a 2-0 lead at the end of the first half. Lucas Vasquez who was part of the starting line-up - mostly due to the absence of the Welshman Gareth Bale - was fouled in the penalty box and Ronaldo took the penalty and scored.

Real Madrid kept on wonderfully when Nacho gave a fantastic cross from the left wing right to the head of Cristiano Ronaldo giving Madrid a second goal. But a careless pass from Luka Modric caused Madrid the score gap to lessen as Gijon scored one goal making it 2-1.

But Real Madrid continued pressing and a scissors kick from captain Ramos that hit the goal frame. Gijon had a penalty when Nacho fouled the substitute Victor Rodriguez. The Croatian forward Cop took the penalty but lost it as he hit it wide and the game ended 2-1 in favour of the White giants.
