BENZEMA SAVES THE DAY FOR REAL MADRID

Karim Benzema saved the day for a rather passive Real Madrid team that flew to Portugal to play against Sporting Lisbon. After Varane scored an early goal that was thought to be an offside, Fabio Coentrao caused a unnecessary penalty kick which took the home team to level terms with the White Giants.

Benzema who came in as a substitute converted a well-struck cross from Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos which gave Madrid a late but much-needed lead.

Real Madrid is still second on the group table. But it's quite predictable that the defending champions will be moving to the next stage.
