Man Utd to be without van Persie for ‘a long time’

Van Persie has picked up a problem with his ankle and though van Gaal insisted it wasn’t serious, he did admit it would take a while to heal enough for the striker to return to playing. Van Persie was injured late in United’s 2-1 defeat against Swansea City on February 21.

“He is injured,” van Gaal confirmed regarding van Persie’s status at a pre-match Press conference ahead of United’s game against Sunderland. “He is the only injured player I have, so we change [Michael] Carrick for van Persie.

“[Van Persie] has an ankle problem,” van Gaal added. “I don’t think it’s very heavy but an ankle problem takes a long time. It’s not one week or two weeks but we have to wait and see.”

Former Arsenal striker and captain van Persie has so far this season scored 10 goals in his 27 appearances for United, having netted 58 times in 101 appearances since his August 2012 move from the Gunners. The 31-year-old spent eight years as an Arsenal player, racking up 132 goals in 281 games.

United go into the game in fourth place, a point better off than Southampton. Sunderland meanwhile are in 16th, three points off the bottom three following their goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion.
