Herrera ‘wants to emulate Scholes at Man Utd'

Herrera, a summer signing from La Liga outfit Athletic Bilbao, fell out of Louis van Gaal’s favour earlier in the season but upon regaining his place in the manager’s starting XI, has scored two goals in as many games.

The Spain youth international netted in the FA Cup win over Preston North End and the Premier League defeat to Swansea City, having previously scored against Queens Park Rangers, Leicester City and Yeovil Town.

The 25-year-old explained in an interview with the Manchester Evening News that his intention isn’t to replace or copy Scholes, but rather learn from what made Scholes successful and add it to his game, and likewise with some of his current United teammates too.

“Paul Scholes is maybe the biggest midfielder in the United history,” Herrera said. “Yes. I want to be Ander Herrera, I want to learn things from Paul Scholes, things from Michael Carrick, things from Wayne Rooney.

“I wish one day I can be so important for the fans, but I have to work very, very hard for that,” he continued. “But, I think I am 25 years old, I have to learn a lot from my teammates, from great players like Paul Scholes and I want to learn.”

Herrera began his playing career at Real Zaragoza, making the move to Athletic in 2011 after 86 appearances for Los Manos. He went on to play more than 100 times for Athletic, before heading to Old Trafford.
