Liverpool 3-2 Tottenham: Mario Balotelli scores first EPL goal

From Mario Balotelli there was not even a flicker of a smile. Away on the touchline, though, Brendan Rodgers made no attempt to hide his and no wonder.

Thirteen games and seven months in to a Barclays Premier League career with Liverpool that may not last beyond this summer, Balotelli finally contributed a goal and it may just be one to give his team’s season the impetus it needs.
In truth, it wasn’t that much to look at, a toe end diverting a low cross from Adam Lallana high in to the roof of the net from a couple of yards. In terms of its timing, however, it had everything.

On a night when they knew they really had to beat Tottenham, Liverpool looked as though they may not be able to do it. Twice they had led – through Lazor Markovic and Steven Gerrard – and twice they had squandered that lead, Harry Kane and Mousa Dembele scoring for Tottenham.

In truth, a draw would have been fair. Tottenham had begun slowly but had grown in to the game. For Liverpool the opposite had been true.
Rodgers and Liverpool, however, have been waiting for an impact from Balotelli and now they have it. Now – with the race for the Champions League place an open one – it is up to them to make the most of it.
