Papiss Cisse hit with seven-match ban

Jonny Evans has denied any wrongdoing and will have until 6pm on Friday to accept or deny the FA charge.

The incident happened in a coming together in the 38th minute, with the game still locked at 0-0, near the halfway line, brought a reaction by Evans, who reacted to the Senegalese striker who appeared to catch Evans whilst both men tussled for the ball.

Evans was then seen to spit in the direction of Cisse, who in turn spat towards the Northern Ireland international. The officials missed the altercation between the pair, although a free kick was given to Newcastle.

The ban will see Newcastle’s top goalscorer this season miss a large chunk of the games and will now be missing from John Carver’s side until May, when Newcastle face Tony Pulis’ West Bromwich Albion. Cisse will miss three home games against Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Swansea City and four away games which include Everton, the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland, Liverpool and Leicester City.

Newcastle are 11th following their defeat against Louis Van Gaal’s side, 13 points clear of Queens Park Rangers – who have a game in hand.

With 11 goals to his name this season, the Newcastle striker has six more goals then Ayoze Perez, who lies second in the Magpies list of top goalscorers.

Manchester United won the game 1-0, with an 89th minute winner by winger Ashley Young, keeping the Red Devil’s Champions League ambitions alive.
