Newcastle United 0-1 Manchester United: Young strikes late to snatch all three points at St James’ Park
Manchester United started the first-half strongly, but couldn’t make the most of their chances created.
Wayne Rooney was the most lively in the attack, with the England international making great runs to stretch the defence, but Newcastle came closest to scoring early on.
Newcastle stuck to their counter attacking style, and should have had a penalty when Manchester United defender Chris Smalling brought down Emmanuel Riviere in the area. But the referee and linesman were both unmoved, before the match officials were once again in the middle of more controversy following an altercation between Manchester United defender Jonny Evans and Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse.
The Magpies were guilty of missing crucial opportunities through the game, but Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea was in typically strong form to keep the North-East outfit quiet.
The deciding goal for Manchester United came in the last few minutes of the game, with Ashley Young scoring the winning effort, courtesy of a dangerous backpass from Mehdi Abeid and poor clearance from Krul that fell to the feet of Young to score from close range.
