Rooney focused beyond goal record: Surpassing Charlton's 49 goals will still leave Wayne short of greatness

The record is coming. Everyone knows that now. It might be on Tuesday night in the Juventus Stadium, Turin or in June at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin or the Stozice Stadium in
Ljubljana, Slovenia.

But Wayne Rooney will be England’s leading scorer, eclipsing
Sir Bobby Charlton. ‘I hope so,’ said Rooney, when asked
about it in the aftermath of England’s 4-0 win over
Lithuania. ‘I still feel I’ve got a good few years left playing
for England so I’d be disappointed if I didn’t get three
goals in them years! Like my 100th cap, it would be great to
achieve and then move on again from that. It would be great
if I could get it and then push on further.
‘There’s no getting away from it. It’s there and it could be
on Tuesday, it could be in the summer, or it could be after
that. If it happens, obviously I can speak more. I’m just
looking at doing well for the team, trying to score goals to
help us win games and help us keep progressing.’
