FIFA approves the expansion of World Cup to 48 teams


FIFA has unanimously approved the World Cup expansion to 48 teams. This expansion will commence in 2026 with the addition of 16 new teams.
After the vote was taken, the preferred option was a 16-group tournament with 3 teams in each group which will increase the number of games from 64 to 80 but still within the 32-day schedule.
