Sam Allardyce says there is no guarantee Jermain Defoe will start in his side at Sunderland.
The former England striker was frustrated with life under previous boss Dick Advocaat, who either used him on the left wing or, as was the case in recent matches, from the bench.
But Allardyce has hinted that he, too, will ask for more from Defoe before he is certain of a place in the team.
'There is always a place for a goalscorer, but you cannot just be a goalscorer today, so perhaps that's something we need to address with Jermain,' he said,
'He has not played as much as he would have liked, but that really lies with performance analysis.
'You analyse everyone's performance on Prozone and you look at the contribution they make on a game-to-game basis.
'You can also judge with your eyes using your experience and then come to a decision on who is best equipped at that moment in time of playing in your team.
'So when players don't play it is generally because they drop themselves, not because you have dropped them.'
