Wayne Rooney equals Sir Bobby Charlton goal record

Amidst rolling hills, basking in a balmy late summer sunset and over-looked by a mountain-top castle, a little piece of English football history was secured on Saturday night.

The San Marino Stadium - capacity 4.378 - is not one most-intimidating arenas known to international football, nor is it home to the most-formidable opponents but that will not matter a great deal to Wayne Rooney.

For it is here that he equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s 45-year record of 49 international goals...

He couldn’t quite take history one stepped further and beat that tally, as he was substituted on 58 minutes, to boos from the England fans who wanted him to stay on and to warm applause from appreciative San Marino supporters. But still, he now at least sits alongside Sir Bobby and will surpass him soon, possibly on Tuesday against Switzerland....
