Karim Benzema was the hero for Real Madrid as they ground out victory against
Athletic Bilbao to go top of La Liga.
 
The Frenchman struck twice to give his side an away win against tricky, gritty opponents and capitalise on Barcelona's collapse at Celta Vigo.
 
Before this success it had only been trouble for Real Madrid at the new San Mames, with a Cristiano Ronaldo red card, a draw and a defeat in the two games they played here before.
