According to ESPNFC, former Barcelona president Joan Laporta said Barcelona were on the move to acquire Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo in 2003.
Laporta said he was appointed as the President of Barcelona that year where he had an excellent leadership term for 10 years,
He said they planned to buy Ronaldinho, Marquez, and Deco. But at the time, Deco was too expensive so they moved to buy another Portuguese International who was at Sporting Lisbon by the name of Cristiano Ronaldo.
They were to beat Manchester United to the signing of the young Portuguese but United offered €19 million but Barcelona offered only €17 million. Only then did Ronaldo reject Barcelona to move to the English side Manchester United. According to Laporta, it was a really sad time.
But he is still very pleased with his 10-year term that ended in 2013, and he said, "I think [Lionel Messi] is the best player in the history of football".
