According to 90min.com, after fighting so hard to please the former coach of Real Madrid Jose Mourinho but still finding it impossible, Garay decided to leave Real Madrid and claimed that was the best decision of his career.

After the Valencia defender moved to Benfica, he said he had a spectacular year that first year. And it continued to the third year before he moved to Russia's Zenit St. Petersburg.

Garay said, "I respect Real Madrid as an institution. But I still say that the best decision of my career was getting out of the club, because a player likes to play and I did not [at Madrid].

"I do not regret leaving there as the three years I spent at Benfica after leaving Real were spectacular. At Benfica I had my best years as a player. I was very happy and I won important things.
